Sanjiv Narayan Named Heart Rhythm Society’s 2022 Distinguished Clinical Scientist

Congratulations to Sanjiv Narayan, MD, professor of cardiovascular medicine, who just received the 2022 Distinguished Clinical Scientist award from the Heart Rhythm Society.  Narayan is cited for his work as a mentor as well as his career devoted to “improving the care of patients with complex arrhythmias using bioengineering to translate mechanisms from bench to bedside and back.”


Vivek Bhalla Elected to ASCI

Vivek Bhalla, MD, associate professor of nephrology, has just been elected to the ASCI (American Society for Clinical Investigation) as one of 95 new members for 2022. For the 2022 membership nomination cycle, the Council considered 227 nominations and recommended 95 nominees for election.

Abby C. King Receives Miriam Aaron Roland Volunteer Service Prize

Abby C. King, PhD, professor of epidemiology and population health, has been recognized for her tireless commitment to health equity, access, & outcomes with a “tremendously well-deserved” award: the Miriam Aaron Roland Volunteer Service Prize.  The award “recognizes Stanford faculty who engage and involve students in integrating academic scholarship with significant and meaningful volunteer service.” Congratulations, Abby!


Han Zhu Receives K08 Award

Congratulations to Han Zhu, MD, instructor in medicine, who just received her K08 award, a mentored clinical scientist research Career Development Award.  Zhu is a cardiologist and a Stanford Medicine Residency alum. 


Takudzwa Shumba Named Presidential Leadership Scholar

Congratulations to Takudzwa Shumba, MD, MPH, clinical assistant professor of primary care and population health, for being selected for the Presidential Leadership Scholars (PLS) program, an incredibly competitive and prestigious national leadership development program!  As her division chief Sang-ick Chang explains, “Takudzwa has been leading the Primary Care and Population Health Global Health program in Kenya, as well as the division's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work, and she is having great impact in both arenas.”


Vinicio de Jesus Perez and Ronglih Liao Receive Stanford Cardiovascular Institute Recognition Award


Vinicio de Jesus Perez, MD, associate professor of pulmonary, allergy, and critical care medicine, and Ronglih Liao, MD, professor of cardiovascular medicine, have just received the inaugural Stanford Cardiovascular Institute Recognition Award, which “recognizes CVI faculty members whose efforts increase or celebrate the diversity of CVI members, contribute to fair and just practices that ensure CVI members thrive, and/or promote an environment of mutual respect, belonging, and inclusion at CVI.” Congratulations to both!


George Triadafilopoulos Receives 2022 AGA Distinguished Clinician Award in Private Practice

The American Gastroenterological Association has honored George Triadafilopoulos, MD, clinical professor of medicine in gastroenterology and hepatology, with the 2022 Distinguished Clinician Award in Private Practice, which recognizes members of the practicing community who combine the art of medicine with the skills demanded by the scientific body of knowledge in service to their patients. Congratulations, George!


Lisa Goldman-Rosas Receives Society of Behavioral Medicine's Jessie Gruman Award For Health Engagement

Lisa Goldman-Rosas, PhD, MPH, assistant professor of primary care and population health, has just received the Society of Behavioral Medicine’s Jessie Gruman Award for Health Engagement.  The award, according to the Society, is “in recognition of individuals who have advanced the understanding of how to initiate and sustain people's engagement in their health and health care.” Congratulations, Lisa!


Silvia Loica-Mersa Receives SHC-ValleyCare’s Physician of the Quarter Award

Congrats to Silvia Loica-Mersa, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, recipient of SHC-ValleyCare's Physician of the Quarter Award! This award recognizes providers who deliver quality & safe patient care, who are well-respected by colleagues, and who have demonstrated exceptional work throughout the organization.


Saloni Kumar Selected as SGIM California-Hawaii Region President-Elect

Congratulations to Saloni Kumar, MD, clinical professor of medicine, who has just been named President-Elect for the SGIM (Society of General Internal Medicine) California-Hawaii Region.  She will step into the role next year.

Promotions and Appointments

Eldrin Lewis Awarded Simon Stertzer Professorship

Congratulations to Eldrin Lewis, MD, MPH, division chief and professor of cardiovascular medicine, who was recently celebrated as the inaugural Simon H. Stertzer, MD III Professor. In addition to being the first professor appointed to the Stertzer III chair, Lewis is also the first African-American physician appointed as chief of the division.  This notable milestone is an exciting nexus between Lewis’ vision of driving advancements in care and research for heart patients and Stertzer’s revolutionary contribution to the field in the 1970’s as the first cardiologist to conduct a coronary balloon angioplasty in a patient.   


Mintu Turakhia Promoted to Professor of Medicine

Mintu Turakhia, MD, professor of cardiovascular medicine, was recently promoted to professor of medicine! Colleagues called the promotion “well deserved.”  Turakhia responded to congratulations by stating, “What keeps me going isn't the title but the opportunity to work with smart, hard-working, and generous people to create and to impact.” Congratulations, Mintu!


Joy Wu Named New Division Chief of Endocrinology, Gerontology, and Metabolism

Congratulations to Joy Wu, MD, associate professor of endrocrinology, gerontology, and metabolism, who will serve as the new Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Gerontology and Metabolism as of May 1, 2022.  As Robert Harrington noted, “As Division Chief I know she will continue outgoing division chief Dr. Kraemer’s legacy of outstanding faculty recruitment and help us move the division forward clinically and academically as we look to expanding outpatient activities both virtually and in Redwood City over the next few years.” 


Neeta Gautam Appointed Associate Director for Faculty Wellness in Primary Care and Population Health

Congratulations to Neeta Gautam, MD, clinical assistant professor of primary care and population health, on her appointment to Associate Director for Faculty Wellness for the Division of Primary Care and Population Health in the Department of Medicine.


Nigam Shah Named Stanford Health Care’s First Chief Data Scientist

Nigam Shah, MBBS, PhD, Stanford Health Care’s (SHC) associate chief information officer, has been appointed the inaugural chief data scientist for SHC. In this role, he will help ensure that our health system remains at the forefront of using artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to improve patient care and create operational efficiencies. Congratulations, Nigam!


Shireen Hedari Named New Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Director

Congratulations to Shireen Hedari, MD, clinical assistant professor of primary care and population health, who was recently appointed the new Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) Fellowship Director.  The announcement included warm wishes for Shireen and gratitude for V.J. Periyakoil, who helped develop the HPM fellowship into the current program.


33 Stanford Researchers Named Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigators

Congratulations to the 33 Stanford researchers (including several of our DOM colleagues) recently named as the latest cohort of Chan Zuckerberg BioHub Investigators. Successful applicants are receiving $1 million in unrestricted gift funds over a nonrenewable 5-year term ($200,000 per year), with a start date of March 1, 2022.
