Steven Goodman awarded 2016 Spinoza Chair

The University of Amsterdam has awarded the 2016 Spinoza Chair in medicine to Steven Goodman, MD, PhD (professor, General Medical Disciplines and Health Research and Policy).

The chair was established in 1995 by the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam, and is named for Baruch Spinoza, the 17th-century Dutch philosopher. The visiting professorship is awarded to two high-profile laureates each year, one in medicine and the other in philosophy.

Goodman will be in residence at the university for a week during the month of May, giving “master classes” on the foundation of scientific and statistical reasoning. On May 24 he will deliver the keynote Spinoza Lecture on the causes and cures of the current crisis in research reproducibility.

Goodman attended medical school at New York University, and received a master’s degree in biostatistics and a PhD in epidemiology from Johns Hopkins. He came to Stanford in 2011.
