Maintaining residents' wellness and camaraderie is important to Stanford.
Physician Support
The hospital-wide wellness program provides a peer support system to residents who have experienced difficult cases and to promote wellness and camaraderie.
We take physician well-being seriously and are committed to promoting resilience as well as preventing burnout among our housestaff. Some resources available to our residents include online access to a dedicated Stanford primary care provider and a wellness coach who is a fitness trainer or nutritionist. Our residents also have access to mental health providers for confidential services, including counseling and referrals if need be. Stanford GME hosts a Peer Support network, which allows residents to connect anonymously with trained peer supporters from other programs (often residents of similar PGY levels), who are available to provide support during difficult situations. Our housestaff have have formed a wellness committee focusing on resident needs and helping foster programs such as a wellness curriculum and pet-therapy visits for housestaff. In fact, physician well-being has been a focus of some of our residents' scholarly quality improvement projects. Additionally, our Internal Medicine Women's Group offers a safe and supportive environment to discuss issues related to gender in medical training, as well as practical mentorship for career advancement (in areas such as negotiation and conflict resolution). Finally, our intramural sports groups and access to Stanford campus facilities such as the Arrillaga Gyms, Cardinal Football games, and the Bing Concert Hall are favorites among the group.
