Stanford Welcomes New Class of Residents

By Communications Staff

With another virtual match day, Stanford welcomes its new class of 2021-22 residents.

Stanford's newest residency class is the biggest yet: Match Day 2022 concluded with a whopping 65 incoming interns. As the second annual all-virtual recruitment session, this was another feat of logistics, know-how, and dedication on the part of both faculty and staff.

The 65 incoming interns include 42 Categorical Interns, 2 Global Health Track interns, 1 Medicine-Anesthesia intern, and 20 Anesthesia/Neurology interns who will be at Stanford for 1 year.

Ron Witteles, MD, professor of cardiovascular medicine and Residency Program Director, extended his sincere thanks to everyone who participated in recruitment, which entailed "interviewing 364 students across 14 days, 14 virtual 'dinner' sessions and coordinating more than 1000 (!) individual virtual interviews." He concluded, "I am certain that you'll all greatly enjoy working with this incredible group of incoming housestaff for the coming years."

By the numbers

This year Stanford matched our largest class ever of 65 incoming interns, including 42 Categorical Interns, 2 Global Health Track interns, 1 Medicine-Anesthesia interns, and 20 Anesthesia/Neurology interns who will be with us for 1 year.  The new class includes 8 MD-PhDs matched into our physician-scientist (TIP) program - in addition to 10 more incoming Categorical interns with Masters degrees. 13% of our incoming IM residents & 17% of our whole incoming intern class come from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in medicine.
