Joseph Wu Named President-Elect of the American Heart Association

Joseph C. Wu, MD, PhD, Simon H. Sterzer Professor of Medicine and Director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, will serve as the President-elect of the American Heart Association for FY2022-2023, effective July 1, 2022. He will have a three-year term and will follow Dr. Bob Harrington who recently completed his presidency. Colleagues, including Eldrin Lewis, cheered the announcement, saying, “He has a long history of volunteerism and leadership with the AHA. His impact on the Association’s research efforts has been immeasurable, especially his focus on supporting promising young, mid-career and senior investigators and expanding international collaborations.” Congratulations, Joe!


Peter Poullos Awarded 2022 President’s Award for Excellence Through Diversity

Peter Poullos, MD, clinical associate professor of gastroenterology and hepatology, received the President's Award for Excellence Through Diversity for "advocating for greater visibility of disability and improved accessibility, resources, and services as founder and leader of the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE) and as board member of the Stanford Disability Initiative." Congratulations, Peter!


Nidhi Rohatgi Receives Best Clinical Innovations Award at Perioperative Medicine Summit

Nidhi Rohatgi, MD, MS, clinical associate professor of medicine, served as faculty on two workshops at the Society of Hospital Medicine National Meeting in April 2022, and received the Best Clinical Innovations Award for her SHC Clinical Advice Service team’s work on patient education, patient safety, and patient experience for patients undergoing same-day surgeries. Congratulations, Nidhi!


Alan C. Yeung Receives the 2022 TCTAP Master of Masters Award

Alan C. Yeung, MD, professor of cardiovascular medicine, was just named the winner of the 12th Master of the Masters Award by Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics Asia Pacific (TCTAP). The award recognizes an expert’s distinguished contribution to interventional cardiology. Alan addressed the evolution of interventional cardiology in the Asia-Pacific region and his research path in a special lecture titled “My 30-year Journey in the Evolution of Asia-Pacific Interventional Cardiology” during the awards ceremony. Congratulations, Alan!


Bryant Lin Receives University-Wide 2022 Asian American Faculty Award

Congratulations to Bryant Lin, MD, MEng, clinical professor of primary care and population health, who has been selected to receive the 2022 Stanford Asian American Faculty Award! He is being recognized for his outstanding achievements and service to Stanford and the Asian American community.


Jeffrey Glenn Receives NIH Antiviral Drug Development Award

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has awarded Jeffrey Glenn, MD, PhD, professor of gastroenterology and hepatology, for his research on the Development of Outpatient Antiviral Cocktails against SARS-CoV-2 and other Potential Pandemic RNA Viruses. Congratulations, Jeffrey!

David Relman and Abraham Verghese Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

David Relman, MD, professor of infectious diseases and of microbiology and immunology, and Abraham Verghese, MD, MACP, professor of medicine and vice chair for the theory and practice of medicine, are among nine Stanford faculty members elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The academy, one of the most prestigious honorary societies in the United States, is a center for independent policy research. Congratulations to both David and Abraham!


Faculty Women’s Forum Awards Glenn Chertow, Holly Tabor, and Celina Yong

Glenn Chertow, MD, MPH, professor of nephrology, Holly Tabor, PhD, associate professor of primary care and population health, and Celina Yong, MD, MBA, MSc, assistant professor of cardiovascular medicine, were honored by the Faculty Women's Forum for "their outstanding work supporting women at Stanford through role modeling, allyship, leadership, and sponsorship." Yong received the Inspiring Early Academic Career Award, Tabor received the Allyship Award, and Chertow received the Outstanding Sponsor Award.  Congratulations to all!


Stanford Administrative Champions Win OfficeNinjas All Star Award

OfficeNinjas, a professional development organization for administrative and operations professionals, has honored the Stanford Administrative Champions (SAC) with the 2022 OfficeNinjas All-Star Awards for their "vision, commitment, efforts, and impact." Congratulations to all recipients!  We are so proud of you.


DOM Researchers Honored at ACC 2022

In early April, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) recognized the achievements of DoM researchers at their 71st Annual Scientific Session in Washington. They honored Fatima Rodriguez, MD, assistant professor of cardiovascular medicine, with the 2022 Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Award for her contributions to the cardiovascular profession and Hannah Valantine, MD, MBBS, professor of cardiovascular medicine, for her leadership in health equity, diversity and science. Brian Palmisano, MD, fellow in cardiovascular medicine, and Krishna Pundi, MD, postdoctoral fellow of cardiovascular medicine, received the ACC/ABC/Merck and BMS Research Fellowships. Congratulations to all awardees!

Promotions and Appointments

Ravi Majeti Appointed New Director of Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine

Ravi Majeti, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and division chief of hematology, has been appointed the next Director of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Majeti is one of the nation’s leading researchers investigating leukemia stem cells in blood cancers and translating those discoveries to clinical therapies. He has worked closely with outgoing institute director Irv Weissman, MD, and will assume his new role on September 1st. Congratulations, Ravi!


Laurence Katznelson Appointed President-Elect of Pituitary Society

Please join us in congratulating Laurence Katznelson, MD, professor of endocrinology and neurosurgery, on his election as President-Elect of the Pituitary Society! We are very familiar with Katznelson's wonderful leadership in his roles as Endocrinology Fellowship Program Director, Medical Director of the Pituitary Center, and Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education. He is truly deserving of recognition by this international organization dedicated to furthering the understanding of diseases of the pituitary gland. Congratulations, Larry!


Angela Rogers and Vinicio de Jesus Perez Elected to Important ATS Leadership Roles

Two pulmonary, allergy, and critical care medicine faculty were elected to leadership roles in the American Thoracic Society (ATS). Vinicio de Jesus Perez, MD, associate professor of pulmonary, allergy, and critical care medicine, was elected chair of the Pulmonary Hypertension Assembly and Angela Rogers, MD, associate professor of pulmonary, allergy, and critical care medicine, was elected chair of Allergy, Immunology, and Inflammation. In addition to leading their assemblies, both will serve as members of the ATS board of directors for three years. Congrats to Angela and Vinicio!


Stanford Awards for 2021-22 Academic Year Include Many DOM Faculty and Residents

Congratulations to the more than 40 recipients of awards for excellence in teaching, patient care, and more that were given out recently by Stanford Medicine in recognition of outstanding contributions during the 2021-2022 academic year. Tracy Rydel, MD, clinical associate professor of primary care and population health, received the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Teaching Award for Outstanding and Innovative Contributions to Medical Education.

Daniel Bernstein, MD, the Alfred Woodley Salter and Mabel G. Salter Endowed Professor in Pediatrics; Lars Osterberg, MD, professor of primary care and population health, and Holly Tabor, PhD, associate professor of primary care and population health, received the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Preclinical Teaching.

Gordon Gao, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, Andre Kumar, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, and Mo Mertaban, MD, clinical assistant professor of pediatric hospital medicine, received the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching.

Ara Ko, MD, assistant professor of surgery, An Diem La, MD, clinical assistant professor, and Benjamin Laniakea, MD, clinical assistant professor of primary care and population health, received the Arthur L. Bloomfield Award in Recognition of Excellence in the Teaching of Clinical Medicine.

Mina Charon, MD, clinical assistant professor of primary care and population health, received the Outstanding Community Clinic Preceptor, Clinical Instruction Award.

Pedram Fatehi, MD, clinical associate professor of nephrology, received the Award for Excellence in Promotion of Humanism.

Lisa Chamberlain, MD, professor of pediatrics, and Erika Schillinger, MD, clinical professor of primary care and population health, received the Award for Exceptional Community Service.

Medical residents Jonji Barber, MD, Andrew Brennan, MD, Dylan Lukato, MD, Ria Pal, MD, Derek Smith, MD, and Celeste Witting, MD, received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award for Humanism and Excellence in Teaching. The award is given to residents based on their commitment to teaching and the compassionate treatment of students, colleagues and patients and their families.

Preetha Basaviah, MD, clinical professor of primary care and population health, Jon Bernstein, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics, Cynthia DeTata, MD, clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Kimberly Harney, MD, clinical associate professor, Wilma Lee, MD, clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Fernando Mendoza, MD, associate dean of minority advising and programs, and Charles Prober, MD, professor of pediatrics, microbiology and immunology, received the Oscar Salvatierra Award for Exceptional Service to Stanford Medical Students and the School of Medicine.


SHC Awards Many DOM Faculty and Staff

At the presentation of the 2022 Stanford Health Care medical staff awards, administrators and honorees alike praised teamwork and a collaborative environment for fostering the exemplary work recognized at the ceremony, and of course, the DOM was well represented.

The prestigious Physician of the Year Award went to Nancy Morioka-Douglas, MD, clinical professor of medicine. Over a 40-year career as a family medicine doctor, researcher, educator and mentor, Morioka-Douglas empowered patients to take care of their own health. She created the successful Stanford Youth Diabetes Coaches Program and the Positive Experience Project for older adults with depression.

For the first time, the award for Excellence in Quality and Safety went to a recipient whose primary focus is education. Erika Schillinger, MD, clinical professor of medicine and a highly decorated teacher, is the executive director of the Patient and Family Engaged Medical Education Programs, including the innovative Walk With Me, which pairs students with patients who have chronic or serious illnesses to form a connection and foster support.

Errol Ozdalga, MD, clinical associate professor of medicine, won the Excellence in Service Award. Ozdalga, the director of the Program for Bedside Medicine, was recognized for his exceptional clinical care, specifically his skill and empathy in having difficult conversations with patients and their families. Ozdalga, director of communications for the Department of Medicine, was commended for adapting quickly to the pandemic, moving the weekly medical grand rounds online and aggressively recruiting experts from around the nation to address timely matters, both of which increased attendance.

Ria Paul, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, won the Value Improvement Award for her work in accountable care and value-based care.

Wendy Caceres, MD, clinical associate professor of medicine, received the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award. As associate program director of the Stanford Internal Medicine Residency Program, Caceres “changed the trajectory” of the program to consider selection from a more holistic perspective, Harrington said.

Julieta Gabiola, MD, clinical professor of medicine, received the Kevin Malott Award for Humanitarian Service. Gabiola founded ABC’s for Global Health, focused on improving chronic disease management in Filipinos in the Philippines and in the United States. In addition to regular medical missions, she helped develop a robust telehealth program long before the pandemic.

Jeff Chi, MD, section chief of General Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine, won the Innovations in Care Award for ensuring hospital shifts were covered throughout the pandemic, even as colleagues lauded him for his respect and support for physician well-being.

Poonam Hosamani, MD, clinical associate professor of medicine, won the Excellence in Teaching Award for her passionate dedication to education.

Three people were honored posthumously:

Steven Coutre, MD, professor of hematology; Ellie Guardino, MD, PhD, oncologist and former vice president at Genentech; and Stanley Shrier, MD, founding member of the Division of Hematology at Stanford.
