Resident Brooke Peterson Gabster shares her Perspective

This past year, resident Brooke Peterson Gabster was diagnosed with a bone cancer known as metastatic osteosarcoma. She’s currently six months into treatment, an experience she details in an essay recently published by JAMA Network. The current state of medicine gives rise to much discussion on the importance of physician empathy and presence, and Gabster’s journey provides unique and powerful perspective from her role as a doctor and a patient. If given the opportunity to again care for patients, it’s my understanding of an “all-consuming” diagnosis that will make me a better doctor, she says.

The narrative is part of JAMA’s “A Piece of My Mind” series and can be viewed here.
