Study Design
The foundation of every study is its design, as a proper design optimizes the information that can be gained from a study. The QSU will play an integral role in designing studies.Specifically, we will help to:
- Clearly define primary and secondary outcomes
- Determine a sampling plan including inclusion/exclusion criteria
- Identify a randomization scheme for treatment allocation
- Refine and formulate hypotheses corresponding to outcomes
- Develop a sound analytic plan
- Calculate a sample size with adequate power to address study aims
Data Analysis
The QSU has experienced statisticians with knowledge of advanced techniques for analyses that are both simple and complex. We will help to:
- Analyze data following a sound statistical plan
- Derive new methods when necessary
- Interpret results
- Perform interim-study as well as end-of-study analyses as appropriate
- Disseminate findings
Data Management and Coordination
To ensure the integrity of a study, high quality data maintenance is vital. The QSU will provide resources for securely housing, recording, and tracking data for observational and experimental studies including clinical trials in a HIPAA- and IRB-compliant manner. Specifically, we will:
- Design and maintain a secure user-friendly system for capturing data with built-in quality control capabilities
- Perform routine data checks for quality control
- Clean data prior to producing a data set for analysis
- Provide reports on adverse events when relevant
Education and Training
QSU members have extensive experience teaching research methods to non-statisticians. We will be involved in the mentoring and training of DOM faculty through one-on-one collaborations as well as through more formal teaching.
