Chair's Corner: Summer 2012

Robert Harrington MD Department of Medicine Chair

Robert Harrington, MD

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the warm welcome to Stanford. My family and I look forward to life in this beautiful part of the country and getting to know the extraordinary people in the Department of Medicine and throughout the entire Stanford community..

Over the next few months, I plan to spend a great deal of time listening—to leadership, faculty, trainees, students, staff, and staff leaders— to understand the Stanford culture as much as I can in a short period of time.  As we move forward, we together will craft a strategic plan that reflects on my background as a clinician scientist to create new programs that contribute to the success of the talented researchers, clinicians, and educators in the Department.

Connecting the science with the clinical care world at Stanford is an important element of our future and current search for a new Vice Chair of Clinical Research. He or she will play a key role in building translational research and efforts to move groundbreaking ideas from the discovery phase to the bedside.

Expanding Stanford’s reputation as a lead provider of primary care is another priority. A strong leadership team will carry us into the forefront of a health care system that holds us accountable for the delivery of primary care to diverse populations of patients within our community and around the world.

Finally, but perhaps most importantly, I want to express my gratitude to Linda Boxer for her efforts in making this transition go as smoothly as possible and welcome her in her new position as Senior Vice Chair.

Have a wonderful summer.
Robert Harrington, MD
