Speaker Series

This month we are pleased to highlight our new speaker series centered on medical grand rounds. The theme of the 2008 series is “Medicine and the Public Trust.” The goal of the series is to stimulate a continuing dialogue at Stanford and throughout the nation on topics that are central to the public's confidence in the future of our health care system and the role of physicians in ensuring the health of individuals and the population more broadly.

Hewlett Award

Every year the Department of Medicine honors an outstanding physician with ties to Stanford. Previous winners are consummate physicians who have consistently demonstrated an outstanding combination of a scientific approach to medicine and compassion and sensitivity in patient care. The Hewlett Award was designed as a tribute to Dr. Walter Albion Hewlett, professor and head of the Department of Medicine from 1916-1925. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 recipient. National Public Radio, 7/28/08
Division of Oncology Chief, Ron Levy, MD talked to NPR about his research using tobacco plants to make vaccine that will treat cancer. He is the senior author of a study with prospects for a cancer treatment without side effects. Results of Levy's work appears in the Journal Preceedings of the National Academy of Science. Faculty News and Awards

Ching-Pin Chang, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, was awarded $3.1 million over a five-year period for his proposal to investigate the role of stem cells in the restenosis, or narrowing, of coronary arteries enlarged by angioplasty. More>>
