Remembering Stanley Schrier, an Institution in the Department of Medicine

Stanley L. Schrier, MD, professor emeritus of hematology, passed away on Friday, August 16 at the age of 90.

Schrier was a 1954 graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he remained for his internship, moving to the universities of Michigan and Chicago for additional clinical training. In 1959 he arrived on the new Stanford campus, one of four members of the division of hematology and one of approximately 12-15 in the entire Department of Medicine. By 1968 he was division chief, a position he held until 1995. The division matured greatly during his tenure as chief, a period during which he also pursued his own clinical and research interests in diverse topics in hematology with a focus on red blood cell disorders.

Following his retirement, he assumed an emeritus faculty position and remained an active part of the division and department. He continued seeing patients in the hematology clinic up until this July, interviewed applicants for residency and fellowship, and had an ongoing teaching and mentoring role for countless residents and fellows. At the time of his passing, he was still funded by the NIH as part of a consortium to investigate anemia in the elderly.

In an article about Schrier written for the 2016 Annual Report of the Department of Medicine, this apt sentence appeared: “For somebody who came here more than 50 years ago and who helped build this place, he is the past. But he’s the future, too, and his enthusiasm for the future says a lot about who we are at Stanford and who we want to be.”

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Klein, and his children and grandchildren. A memorial service is being planned for friends and colleagues, and information will be disseminated when details become available.
