Garrison Fathman, MD, professor of medicine (Immunology and Rheumatology), was presented with the 2015 Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award during a private event at the Mayo Foundation House in Rochester, Minnesota on November 2.

The award was established in 1981 by the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees to honor the exceptional contributions of Mayo alumni to medical practice, research, education, and administration.

Fathman’s groundbreaking work in cellular and molecular immunology has helped to shape the field of immunology and continues to influence the way physicians and researchers understand immune response and treat autoimmune diseases.

In addition to his research, Fathman is a member of many professional organizations, including the Association of American Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He also served as associate editor of the Annual Review of Immunology and sits on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals.

His accomplishments were further detailed in an official Mayo Clinic press release: “Dr. Fathman has made numerous contributions to his field in clinical immunology, including early experiments using peptides of auto-antigens to reverse and prevent autoimmunity and studies identifying the role of different T-cell subsets in autoimmunity and transplantation rejection.”
