Annual TRAM Research Symposium Coming Up

The Translational Research and Applied Medicine (TRAM) program will hold its Annual Research Symposium in Berg Hall, Li Ka Shing Center, on May 20, 2016. The theme this year is Precision Medicine.

“The goal of the Symposium is to highlight examples of TRAM-sponsored research and the achievement of TRAM scholars,” explained Joanna Liliental, PhD, who co-directs the TRAM program with Dean Felsher, MD, PhD. “This year, talks will focus on the clinical utility of genomic and precision medicine approaches.”

Two speakers from industry – Robert Chess, MBA, Chairman of Nektar Therapeutics, and Frederic de Sauvage, MD, PhD, Vice President of Genentech, will join several Stanford faculty members as speakers. Stanford speakers will discuss how precision medicine is applied in each of their areas of expertise. They include Dean Felsher, MD, PhD, and director of TRAM, who will speak about regulating immune responses; Carolyn Bertozzi, PhD, who will speak on cancer immune therapy; Euan Ashley, MD, DPhil, whose contribution is entitled Towards Precision Medicine; and Thomas Montine, MD, PhD, who will speak about Parkinson’s disease.

Six recipients of TRAM pilot grants will also speak about the research their grants supported. Topics range from hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia to dengue and from pharmacogenomics to cancer therapies.

Unique to this year’s program is a performance by the acclaimed St. Lawrence String Quartet, who have offered to present a special musical program they are calling “Precision Listening – with Strings Attached.” While the TRAM event is free, attendees are urged to consider making a donation to support music at Stanford.
