Awards and Honors: August 2016

Cornelia Weyand Honored as Notable Woman in Science and Medicine in Berlin

Once a year, the Max Delbrueck Center for Molecular Medicine, as the representative of the Helmholtz Association in Germany, names a “Notable Woman in Science and Medicine.” In 2016, the Center selected Stanford immunologist Cornelia Weyand, MD, for the honor.

When Weyand traveled to Berlin to accept the award, she delivered the 2016 Elena Timofeeff-Ressovsky Lecture. Her presentation – entitled “The Warburg Effect: From Cancer to Autoimmune Disease”— summarized the work of her research team in defining metabolic checkpoints in protective and pathogenic immune responses.

Weyand says, “An important aspect of being selected as a Notable Woman in Science and Medicine is the interaction with young faculty, fellows and students to share personal perspectives on the career path in science, to highlight personal experiences and to serve as a role model for women scientists. There was great interest in my personal views of how to become a physician-scientist, how to overcome setbacks in life and in research and how to identify a mentor.”
