The Origin of the AwardWhen the Stanford School of Medicine moved from San Francisco to the main campus, new life was established that promised a bright future.
In building for that future, the School neglected recognition of a rich
heritage: Stanford physicians who had demonstrated over decades a combination
of skills in developing scientific knowledge and applying them, as well
as sensitivity to patients. From its central position in the School, the
Department of Medicine has taken the responsibility for recognizing those
consummate physicians by establishing an unusual and important award.
To symbolize this award, Dr. Kenneth L. Melmon (chairman of the Department
of Medicine) sought an artist with a talent for portraying man's humanity.
