Naming of the Award

David A. Rytand, chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1954 to 1960, supplied background information on physicians in Stanford's history to the committee appointed to name the award.

The committee sought individuals recognized as superb doctors, who practiced the scientific approach to medicine, whose accomplishments at Stanford were legendary, and whose names convey a sense of history and respect.
